While Thailand listened in stunned silence / shock to Prime Minister Thaksin's televised announcement that he would not return as prime minister, I was shopping at the supermarket in Siam Paragon. (I know, I know: when the going gets tough, the tough go shopping and all that, but there wasn't much I could do about the political situation anyway.) It's all very posh and cosmopolitan -- except for the signs. No, the supermarket does not really sell flowers in bloom on aisle 23. It's brooms they carry. And I didn't check out the stain removing soup on aisle 21. I wasn't that hungry. And I was afraid I'd be disappointed if it turned out to be just soap.
